You’ve managed to find yourself that bargain flight, but it can quickly become less of a bargain if you start checking in luggage, avoid those extra charges by travelling with hand luggage only. It is not only cost effective but it can be practical and efficient, saves you time queuing at the bag carousel for your luggage, stops overpacking items you won’t wear and ensures your bag arrives with you to your destination.
However we all know packing can be a nightmare, there is a fine line between packing too much and packing too little.
So it’s all about smart packing, knowing your itinerary, thinking ahead and planning outfits, and choosing items that can be interchanged.
Where to begin…
Choose your luggage wisely.
I recommend the travel bag available from Amazon.
Designed for Ryanair at the size of 40x20x25cm/20L, which is exactly the maximum approved Ryanair cabin bag for free and it can be placed overhead bin and under the seat. It is also suitable for EasyJet/ British Airways/Etihad/ Delta and most airlines in the world. It has a separate zip compartment on the base which allows you to pack shoes and your clear bag separately.
Next pack the essentials, toiletries, Suncreams and other liquids I recommend using the travel bottles set. For deodorant, toothpaste etc get travel size. Fill these with your make-up, shampoo, conditioner, suncream etc.
While it is dependent on the time of year, location and itinerary, there is a basic guide you can follow and you can then add bits like bikinis if necessary.
- First I would start with shoes, pack two pairs of footwear, one for every day either a sandal for a sun/beach holiday or trainers for that exploring city break. Then pack neutral colour heels for the evening.
- Jeans are always a great basic to pack, they can be worn during the day during museum and sightseeing tours and for nighttime explorations, if it’s a sun break alternatively pack denim shorts these will do the same job.
- A dressy top that will pair with your jeans or shorts for an evening look and a good t-shirt that will work for the day.
- Two easy light dresses that again could work for day to night depending on your itinerary. Try to choose light fabrics that will fold up small, silk or cotton work best.
- Your accessories will elevate your day outfit to night. Pack jewellery, scarves, a small cross-body bag that will work during the day and at night and a hat. If it’s a sun/beach destination pack at least two swimming costumes.
- Most importantly what you wear travelling will play a huge factor, as you will save space wearing your bulky items. Choose a jacket or coat that will easily interchange from day to night and carry you through to any event, wear bulky shoes whilst travelling either your trainers or boots depending on the season. An oversize shirt works well as you can layer it and alternatively use it as a coverall on the beach.
And finally don’t forget yourself and your passport. Have fun!
