The exact origins of loafers are debated, from being inspired by traditional moccasins worn by the native Americans to the early versions of the ‘ Wildsmith Loafer’ created by Raymond Lewis Loafer in London in 1926.
It was initially designed as a house shoe but gained popularity as a stylish and comfortable option for outdoor wear. Penny Loafers soared into popularity in the 30s and fussier tassel versions were seen on college students in the 50s before gaining ground and power and steaming onto the frenzied boardroom of the ’80s, whilst remaining every school girl’s choice of uniformed shoe in the ’90s.
Fast forward to now, loafers have evolved in design and have been embraced by various subcultures and fashion movements. Overall the comeback of fashion loafers can be attributed to their timeless appeal, comfort, and versatility as well as the fashion industry’s embrace of more casual and classic styles which have become a sought-after footwear choice of both men and women.
The big fashion houses have also played a keynote in the loafer’s rising popularity. Seen on many a runway, high-end brands have introduced modern, updated versions, from bejewelled to the platform, chunky to slim. Fashion houses like Chanel and Gucci have helped to elevate the loafer’s status to become a must-have shoe trend this autumn winter.
