I’ve worked in fashion for over 25 years so I’ve learned a thing or two about styling. Here, I’ve put together my four fashion rules to live by (and shop by) that will make styling yourself a little less challenging in the mornings. It’s all about the four fundamentals!
Fashion Rule #1
Stock up on basics and keep them neutral. This rule ensures you can re-wear the same piece with many other pieces in your wardrobe. For me, this is the simple basic tee, a long sleeve for winter and a short sleeve for summer. I always buy good quality, ensuring a nice fit, and keep them in neutral colours. These simple basics will go with everything in my wardrobe, whether it’s for simple layering or a backdrop piece for a statement skirt, jacket, or even jewellery.
Fashion Rule #2
Dress for your body type. Just because the crop tops are ‘in’ right now doesn’t mean they are meant for everyone. It’s important to understand your body shape and dress accordingly. Choose clothes that flatter your figure and highlight your best features. This will help you feel confident and comfortable in what you’re wearing. Good shapewear is a great asset to any wardrobe, body shape, or size. They will make whatever you wear just fall seamlessly on the body, giving you more structure and confidence.
Fashion Rule #3
Invest in quality go-to pieces. Building a wardrobe with timeless and versatile pieces is essential. Invest in high-quality items like a well-fitting pair of jeans, a classic white shirt, a little black dress, and a tailored blazer. Spend as much as you can on these key pieces that you will wear time and time again. Look at it as spend vs wear, a pair of good jeans may only cost you ten cents a wear, especially if you do ‘girl math’ These key pieces can all be mixed and matched to create various, stylish outfits and will last for years as your template wardrobe. They will allow you to add the ‘on-trend pieces‘ to refresh and update your wardrobe.
Fashion Rule #4
Accessorise wisely. Accessories can elevate any outfit and add a personal touch to your style. However, it’s important not to overdo it, and learn when to hold back. Choose a few statement pieces or delicate accessories that compliment your outfit without empowering it. Remember, less is often more when it comes to accessorizing. Here are a few of my favourite classic pieces to accessorize any wardrobe.
